Source Filmmaker (commonly abbreviated to SFM) is a 3D rendering and animation program developed by Valve. As its name implies, the software runs on the 'Source' engine, sharing the same engine as many of Valve's games, such as Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, and Half Life 2. The advantage of this is that SFM allows users to utilise assets from other Valve games, such as models, maps, sounds, visual effects and more if the user has that particular game installed. Users can make animations and 3D-rendered still images or posters using the program.
SFM has been used to make short animations such as the "Meet The Crew" set of animations for Team Fortress 2 as well as trailers for Valve games. SFM also has Steam Workshop implementation, allowing community-submitted assets to be used in projects.
